Men’s bantamweight champion Garbrandt is slated to defend his title against his former Team Alpha Male colleague in the co-main event of UFC 213, which takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 8.

However, a back injury to the Ohio native has brought about the cancellation of the eagerly-anticipated contest.

Garbrandt, who claimed the men’s 135lbs crown last December at UFC 207, broke the news on Twitter earlier this evening.

“Flying to Germany tomorrow for my second back procedure in less than 3 months, rest easy T.J Dillashaw your time will come,” he tweeted.

“I tore my back over two months ago and did stem cells that didn’t heal my back as I was told, now off to Germany for another procedure!”

The UFC brass have yet to announce the cancellation of the contest, which was supposed to headline the second card of International Fight Week.

UFC president Dana White will address the media later this evening at the promotions ‘Summer Kickoff’ press conference, which will feature fighters from UFC 212, UFC 213 and UFC 214.

The cancellation of Gabrandt vs. Dillashaw will no doubt be announced by the UFC chief.

Highly passionate MMA Journalist, and I've followed the sport ever since my favorite fighter, Vitor Belfort won the heavyweight tournament at UFC 12. After that I've tried to go to every local MMA event around the Gulf Coast and surrounding areas and decided to make it a point to have a career in some aspect in the fighting sport other than fighting in general (didn't want to ruin my face). I'm currently enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana University working towards a degree in Communication. I cover MMA, Boxing and Football for The Daily Star newspaper in my hometown of Hammond, Louisiana, in addition to working as a promotional writer for a local Boxing promotion known as BoxnCar and I cover boxing for 8countnews.com however SciFighting.com is my home. My main goal is to bring more publicity to MMA in my area and to the sport as a whole as all of us involved with the sport are merely scratching the surface and laying the foundation of what mixed martial arts competition will be further down the road.
