Weight cutting has killed yet another combat sports athlete. On Saturday, Scotland’s Jordan Coe, 20, died of heat stroke while cutting weight in Thailand. The news was first reported by Thailand’s Daily News (Thai language); it was also covered by the English-language Bangkok Post, and was covered in more knowledgeable detail by Muay Thai Authority.

Jordan trained at Lamnammoon Sor Sumalee Gym in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. He was in Khorat, a northern province in Thailand for a scheduled fight on Sunday against Cambodian fighter Kohn Bola for ASEAN promotion. The fight was to take place at 61 kg (134.4 lbs), Jordan was trying to lose 3 kg (6.6 lbs).

He left his hotel on Saturday around 11:30 AM dressed in heavier clothing to try and shed the weight. He did not return that night and police found him on Sunday in the Muang district dead from what appeared to be a heat stroke.

Jordan had the ring name Deachkalek Sor Sumalee and had been living in Thailand for three years as he trained and fought Muay Thai. The sentiments for Jordan and his family have poured in on social media, while some people are upset that this occurred from what at the moment seems to be a weight cut.

Weight cutting has been a hot button issue in combat sports over the past few years with one of the biggest complaints against it being how dangerous it can be if not done properly.

Jordan was known as “the dancing boxer” according to the Bangkok Post, before his fights he danced in a traditional style while playing the kaen (wooden pipes).

He was originally from Scotland and had fought for promotions such as Yokkao, Rebellion Muay Thai, and Super Muaythai. He had shared the ring with fighters such as Victor Pinto and Dan McGowan in his young career.

The weather on Saturday when Jordan went for a run was in the mid to high 90’s. The doctors stated that the preliminary cause of death is shock to his system from severe dehydration, which was caused by running in the heat. Police Captain Prachakorn Promduang stated that a detailed autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death.

Jordan had over 70 fights to his name, and was a rising star. It is truly sad to see such a young talent taken away so soon.

RIP Jordan Donald.

Highly passionate MMA Journalist, and I've followed the sport ever since my favorite fighter, Vitor Belfort won the heavyweight tournament at UFC 12. After that I've tried to go to every local MMA event around the Gulf Coast and surrounding areas and decided to make it a point to have a career in some aspect in the fighting sport other than fighting in general (didn't want to ruin my face). I'm currently enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana University working towards a degree in Communication. I cover MMA, Boxing and Football for The Daily Star newspaper in my hometown of Hammond, Louisiana, in addition to working as a promotional writer for a local Boxing promotion known as BoxnCar and I cover boxing for 8countnews.com however SciFighting.com is my home. My main goal is to bring more publicity to MMA in my area and to the sport as a whole as all of us involved with the sport are merely scratching the surface and laying the foundation of what mixed martial arts competition will be further down the road.
