On May 6, 2016 a report surfaced in Rupert Murdoch’s The Sun that UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr, the greatest boxer of his generation, were about to announce they’d be boxing in Vegas. The source of the story of Mayweather’s team. The next day Mayweather Sr confirmed the pair would be fighting.

The pair have endlessly bickered since. Most recently Mayweather revealed his opening offer to McGregor. And during a Facebook Live interview with Brian Campbell, he returned to the slights.

“I’m not just the face of boxing, I’m the face of mixed martial arts also,” said Mayweather, as transcribed by Jed Meshew for MMA Fighting. “And I’m not an MMA fighter but I do support all contact sports. I haven’t seen an MMA fight in a while but anytime I see an MMA fighter that wants to take a picture with me, I’m gonna take a picture with them because they go through a lot. Fighters go through a lot to get to a certain level and MMA fighters go through a lot just like boxers go through a lot.”

“I want to tell everybody this, right now. Conor McGregor, do he want to fight? Absolutely not. I’m trying to see if he really want to fight but we can’t make the fight happen because he’s not his own boss. And I want the world to know this: just a fight, two fights ago, he was [knocks table twice] tapping out. He was just [knocks table twice] quitting.

“A lot of fighters – legendary fighters, fighters of today, MMA fighters – everybody says, ‘Floyd Mayweather do us wrong.’ Call me what you want to call me but I’m not a quitter. I don’t quit.”

“I’m an old dude. We believe in working smarter not harder, and the best business move for me is Conor McGregor.”

Here’s the thing, Floyd. McGregor wants to fight you. Every male fighter in MMA would fight you. Every female fighter would take the fight too. But you want to box McGregor, and his contract says he cannot engage in a prize fight without permission. That permission comes from UFC president Dana White, who has two words about this whole thing, “Call me.”

Call him, it’s the easiest boxing match you can get.

Highly passionate MMA Journalist, and I've followed the sport ever since my favorite fighter, Vitor Belfort won the heavyweight tournament at UFC 12. After that I've tried to go to every local MMA event around the Gulf Coast and surrounding areas and decided to make it a point to have a career in some aspect in the fighting sport other than fighting in general (didn't want to ruin my face). I'm currently enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana University working towards a degree in Communication. I cover MMA, Boxing and Football for The Daily Star newspaper in my hometown of Hammond, Louisiana, in addition to working as a promotional writer for a local Boxing promotion known as BoxnCar and I cover boxing for 8countnews.com however SciFighting.com is my home. My main goal is to bring more publicity to MMA in my area and to the sport as a whole as all of us involved with the sport are merely scratching the surface and laying the foundation of what mixed martial arts competition will be further down the road.
