The great actress Meryl Streep won the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes 2017 on Sunday. She took a pointed swipe at the president-elect and a puzzling one at mixed martial arts.
“All of us in this room, really, belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now,” she said. “Think about it: Hollywood, foreigners, and the press. Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if we kick ’em all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which ARE NOT THE ARTS.”
It was weird, as mixed martial arts is a highly international sport – both UFC women’s champions train in the USA, but are foreign nationals. Three male champions are foreign nationals, and one, Michael Bisping, lives in the USA. And while mixed martial arts may not be an art to her, that is through ignorance. As the name indicates, done properly, it is very much an art.
UFC color commentator and professional comic reacted recently to Streep’s blurt.
“To say that some people aren’t artists – martial artists aren’t artists … well, that’s completely open to interpretation,” said Rogan, accurately. “What do you think is beautiful? You think that f***ing stupid fucking movie where you played that rock star … what was that one, that nobody went to see? Listen, that wasn’t art. An Anderson Silva front kick to the face is 1,000 times than that piece of s*** movie you put out lady.”
“I’m sure she’s a very nice person. I’m sure she thinks she’s standing up for what’s right. Get Ready for Ricki, Ricki Flash, get the f*** out of here.”
