The chatter about a Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight that started back in May is on again. Even UFC president Dana White was less dismissive than usual.
In the latest episode, Mayweather compares himself to an elephant vs. McGregor’s ant.
McGregor was #85 on the Forbes list of highest-paid athletes this year, with $22,000,000, while Mayweather was #16 with $44,000,000. That is an elephant to big elephant comparison, not an elephant to ant one. On the other hand, the year before that, Mayweather was #1 with $300,000,000. But in McGregor’s favor, he has only just begun – in April of 2013 when he made his UFC debut, he was on welfare.
Still, in an interview with a TMZ stringer, Mayweather made his case. It began after the interviewer expressed surprise that Mayweather hadn’t seen McGregor fight on Saturday, given that McGregor was “the Mayweather of MMA.”
“I didn’t know Conor McGregor was undefeated,” said Mayweather. “I didn’t know that he had a reign in MMA for 20 years and undefeated, and was world champion in five different weight classes. That’s something I didn’t know. So I guess you guys telling me something new, if you say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA.
“I mean if you say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA, I’m trying to find out – Have you ever made 300 million in one night? Have you ever made $100 million in one night? Have you ever made $70 million in one night? So as far as trying to say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of MMA … I mean, it’s OK to say it. But it’s not true.”
“I’m a legend, a living legend. The sport of boxing I gave years and years of hard work. It was blood, sweat, and tears. Had a tremendous team, had a tremendous run.
“I think it’s time for Conor McGregor to go out there and do what he do. But never compare Conor McGregor to me. It’s a total disrespect. Once again, I’m a elephant. Elephant don’t beef with ants. Elephant is so large he don’t even see ants.”
