The middleweight title picture was supposed to be clear. #2 middleweight contender Chris Weidman fights #4 Yoel Romero on Saturday night, and #3 Jacare Souza was to fight #1 Luke Rockhold later this month. Then whoever won most convincingly got a title shot at Michael Bisping. Rockhold got hurt. And then Bisping said if Romero won, he would
Unfortunately, Rockhold got hurt. And then Bisping said if Romero won, he would refuse the fight, on the basis of a failed PED test and the prolonged benefits of drug use, even years later.
Now Weidman says hopefully if he wins on Saturday, a title shot is “guaranteed.”
“I go out there and win on Saturday night and I’m guaranteed it,” said Weidman to Ariel Helwani. “I’m guaranteed it, there’s no question. There’s no question, I’m guaranteed it. Bisping is going to try to ask for a couple of more welterweights, and some more people that are retired, but at the end of the day I’m going to get the title shot.
“Let’s try to bring this back to Madison Square Garden, maybe fight here again.”
First of course, Weidman has to beat Romero on Saturday night.
Weidman also discussed his acting debut guest-starring along with Adam Sandler on the CBS comedy series “Kevin Can Wait” starring Kevin James. Weidman said he cringed when first watching the scenes, but upon reflection thought is was good, and that his social network agreed.
And The All American discussed the election of Donald Trump.
“Whether you voted for him or not, the country has to come together,” said Wiedman. “At the end of the day, we are America. You have to give him the opportunity. You have to be open-minded with this guy. You have to let him have the opportunity to be president of the United States, regardless of how you feel about him.”
“The way Hillary reacted, the way Obama reacted, they really want to bring this country together. The way Trump reacted, he wants to bring this country together.”
