Holm To Defend Title Before Rousey Rematch

Although Dana White previously said he should lose his promoters license if an immediately rematch between Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey is not booked, it appears Holm will indeed face another opponent before a potential second showdown with “Rowdy.”

“Holly Holm will fight before she fights Ronda,” the UFC President announced on tonight’s edition of FOX Sports 1’s “UFC Tonight.”

A rematch between Holm (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC), No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkieMMA women’s bantamweight rankings, and No. 2-ranked Rousey (12-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) has been a main discussion point since “The Preacher’s Daughter” won the 135-pound title in dramatic fashion at UFC 193 in November.

Holm was a significant underdog going into the fight but managed to completely dominate Rousey before scoring a second-round knockout with the help of a vicious head kick and punches.

With Rousey scheduled to film a pair of movies in the coming months, White and the UFC brasstargeted the rematch for July’s UFC 200 mega-event. Holm, however, stated she would like todefend her title sooner than that and referenced Miesha Tate (17-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) as a title-worthy contender.

It’s unknown if Tate will be the opponent for Holm that White mentioned in the interview, but her status at the No. 3-ranked fighter in the division makes her a likely candidate. And with March’s UFC 197 still needing a main event, not to mention a location, the card seems an obvious potential host for that matchup, though UFC officials declined to comment on the possibility when contacted by MMAjunkie.

As for Rousey, the fact Holm will fight another opponent doesn’t mean the ex-champ will not compete again. White said Rousey’s commitment to the sport remains strong and she will return to the octagon before 2016 comes to a close.

“You will see Ronda Rousey fight again,” White said. Ronda has dedicated the last three-plus years to working hard here. Not just fighting, but promoting and taking the sport and the UFC to a whole other level. Ronda has some well-deserved time off but she will fight this year.”

Highly passionate MMA Journalist, and I've followed the sport ever since my favorite fighter, Vitor Belfort won the heavyweight tournament at UFC 12. After that I've tried to go to every local MMA event around the Gulf Coast and surrounding areas and decided to make it a point to have a career in some aspect in the fighting sport other than fighting in general (didn't want to ruin my face). I'm currently enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana University working towards a degree in Communication. I cover MMA, Boxing and Football for The Daily Star newspaper in my hometown of Hammond, Louisiana, in addition to working as a promotional writer for a local Boxing promotion known as BoxnCar and I cover boxing for 8countnews.com however SciFighting.com is my home. My main goal is to bring more publicity to MMA in my area and to the sport as a whole as all of us involved with the sport are merely scratching the surface and laying the foundation of what mixed martial arts competition will be further down the road.
