Current UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman (13-0) is fresh off of a first round TKO of former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and multiple weight class title challenger Vitor Belfort at UFC 187. Who the next challenger will be for Weidman’s gold is unbeknownst to the Big Apple native, Weidman.
It was reported that Weidman would square up with the former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold (14-2) in the slightly near future. However Weidman believes that fight may have been scrapped for a title eliminator bout between Rockhold and the #2 UFC ranked middleweight Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (22-3).
“I’ll be fighting before the end of the year. I would say against Rockhold or Jacare. I hope so.”
Rockhold fought and defeated Souza in 2011 via Unanimous Decision to take the Strikeforce gold from Jacare. Luke is riding a 4 fight winning streak where all 4 of his opponents were ranked in the top 15 and none of them got to hear the final bell. Rockhold believes Weidman’s recent comments to be a ruse and suggests Chris is simply trolling the internet for pleasure. In a recent interview with Fox Sports, Rockhold explained:
“We spoke with Rockhold Wed. morning and the AKA fighter refuted the rumor, saying that there was “no truth,” to it. Though Rockhold told us that he and Weidman were not actually yet contracted to fight one another, conversations the fighter has had with UFC brass assure him that his next fight will be for The All-American’s belt.”
Rockhold re-iterates the fact that no official paperwork or documents have been dished out or signed but zero amounts of doubt on the happening of the bout should be had.
“No contract, but I just talked to [UFC President] Dana [White],” Rockhold continued. It is 100 percent on.”
After Luke expressed his thoughts to Fox Sports, he then took to his Twitter account to allow his fanbase to know that no #1 contender’s match was to be had.
“Weidman is trolling, fight is on!”
Rockhold’s last loss came by the hands of Weidman’s last conquest when Vitor Belfort defeated Luke via first round TKO at UFC on FX 8 two years ago.
