In a strange turn of events earlier this week, UFC lightweight contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone was punched in the face at a Whole Foods store, here’s the story as told by Donald when he was interviewed by MMAJunkie:
“I got punched in the mouth at a Whole Foods, (and it) knocked the glasses off my head,” Cerrone said earlier this week. “I was texting on my phone and walking across the crosswalk, me and (fiancee Lindsay Sheffield). The guy’s honking. She’s like, ‘You know that guy?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know who that guy is.’ I just didn’t pay any attention and went to my car. They come rolling over, running their mouths. And dude just smoked me and blew my glasses off my face. I was f-cking livid, man. Seeing fire in my eyes. Now, where I’m at having to deal with the boat incident and going through all this, I just bit the bullet,” he said. “I told the dude, ‘Today – today is your lucky day.’”
Cerrone then finished his story and made a small reference to former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones.
“Just the maturity of where I’m at now and being in the public eye, I can’t just – when I’m driving my truck and road rage, I want to get over and beat people up all the time, but I just can’t do it,” he said. “Jon is just young. He’s got a lot of money and making the mistakes. … He’s just in the public eye.”
Speaking of Jones, in a recent interview by Jim Rome, Dana White announced his plans for Jones if and when he returns to the octagon.
“He comes right back and he fights for the title,” UFC President Dana White announced Wednesday on The Jim Rome Show. “He hasn’t had the time that Anderson Silva’s had, but he is the most dominant champion.
“If you look at the murderer’s row of the 205-pound division that he went through, and he just went through it like a hot knife through butter, I mean, he’s the man. So whenever he gets his stuff together, he’d come right back and fight for the title.”
“We had gotten to the point where, you know, it was like if he had one more incident. And the level of the last incident obviously made it that much easier,” White said.
“Obviously he’s been stripped of the title, he’s not fighting anymore, and he’s got these legal issues he’s got to deal with. Once he gets through those, he’s either going to end up with a felony or jail time, or a felony and jail time. So I don’t know how this thing is going to play out. We’ll see how it goes.
“Like I said, he’s got these legal issues and he’s got a civil suit against him. He’s got a civil suit against him and all this other stuff. (We’ll) see how he gets through this and then find out where his head is. How does he handle himself through this situation and after it? I mean, I gotta see from him that he’s doing the right thing.”
Dana then made the headline of the week in MMA by making this claim on a possible Cyborg vs Ronda Rousey PPV.
“I’ll tell you this, Jim, when that fight happens, I’ll guarantee you that thing does over two million pay-per-view buys,” he boasted. “It will be massive.”
