The initial match up was for a 10-round bout between Junior featherweight Manuel “Tino” Avila and Rolly Lunas. Because of a injury suffered during training, Lunas had to withdraw from the fight last week. Erik Ruiz, 23, training out of Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, stepped in Lunas’ place hoping that the fight would give him better prospects down the road.
The bout will be held at Belasco Theater, 1050 S Hill St, Los Angeles, CA 90015. It is a Golden Boy Promotions card, will be televised on Fox Sports 1, starting at 7 p.m.
Erik Ruiz (13-2, 6 KO) is a 2010 graduate of Oxnard High and has trained under World Champion trainer Robert Garcia since his pro debut in June 2011.
Avila (16-0, 7 KO) lives in Fairfield, CA. He is considered on of Golden Boy Promotions’ most highly ranked prize-fighters. He won a crucial 8th round KO victory over Sergio Frias on Aug 22nd.
