Saturday night was the wrong night to be a champion in the UFC. UFC 185 featured lightweight and women’s strawweight title defenses as co-main events with two new champions emerging from the night. We review the co-main events and new champions of each division.
Dos Anjos def. Anthony Pettis via Unanimous Decision
One of the best reviews of the fight came Anthony Pettis himself:
“He caught me with a left hand in the first round, first punch he threw in the fight, I couldn’t see the rest of the fight. No excuses, I’m going back to work.”
Dos Anjos surprised many with a dominating 5-round performance over Anthony Pettis. The southpaw was able to land numerous straight left punches and fightmetric cageside seats stated that he was able to convert 9 out of 10 takedowns on the champion. A dominant 50-45 unanimous decision was awarded to Dos Anjos for the lightweight title.
Jedrzejczyk def. Esparza via TKO
Joanna Jedrzejczyk was on top of her game Saturday night, stopping multiple takedown attempts from the champion. Esparza tried multiple times to negate her opponent’s striking with wrestling, but was punished by Jedrzejczyk’s elbows on the ground. On the feet, Jedrzejczyk could strike almost at will on the champ until the referee called off the fight for a TKO victory.
