Premier Boxing Champion’s debut event featured Keith Thurman’s WBA Welterweight title defense against Robert Guerrero and Adrien Broner’s feature fight with John Molina Jr. in the co-main event. Here are the results of the evening’s co-main events.
Adrian Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) def. John Molina Jr. (27-6, 22 KOs) by unanimous decision (120-108, 120-108, 118-110)
Many expected Molina to come out guns blazing at Adrian Broner, but he spent much of the fight in a passive state. Broner was able to strike at will for much of the fight, but didn’t go full bore for the KO finish. Many were upset with the course of the fight, booing through to the announcement of the results.
Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) def. Robert Guerrero (31-3-1, 18 KOs) by unanimous decision (120-107, 118-109, 118-108)
Thurman and Guerrero came out aggressively from the opening bell. Both were throwing their best, but Thurman was the more active fighter. He also scored the only knockdown of the fight in the 9th round, using two right uppercuts. Guerrero made a hard effort to come back in the remaining 3 rounds, but Thurman outlasted his opponent to retain his title.
Al Haymon’s boxing promotion scored big with the debut event. Based on the fast national numbers, Saturday’s event earned a 2.53 rating and drew in 3.13 million viewers. Al Haymon’s plans for 2014 include time buys on NBC, NBC Sports Network, CBS, CBS Sports Network and Spike for prime time events in hopes to get strong ratings and earn a paying contract. The event was the most-watched sporting event on Saturday, an excellent start for the new promotion.
The next Premier Boxing Champions card airs live on Spike TV next Friday with a main event of Andre Berto versus Josesito Lopez and a co-main of Shawn Porter versus Roberto Garcia.
