Chael Sonnen Meets “Babalu” at Metamoris VI

Old rivals meet again on the Metamoris mat later this year. Metamoris founder Ralek Gracie has confirmed that wordsmith Chael Sonnen is set to face Renato “Babalu” Sobral on May 9th. According to mmafighting.com, the contest will not be the main event of Metamoris VI, but the headlining match is expected to be announced soon.

Metamoris is a promotion founded by Ralek Gracie that features 20-minute submission-only grappling matches. No points are given during the contest, so a winner is declared by submission victory or the contestants fight to a draw. Chael Sonnen made his promotional debut against Andre Galvao at Metamoris IV where he was submitted by rear-naked choke. “Babalu” Sobral competed at Metamoris III where he fought to a draw against UFC veteran Dean Lister.

The pair’s competitive history dates back all the way to their first fight in a promotion called Hitman 3 in 2003, where took a decision win over “Babalu.” Sonnen was not be so lucky in his UFC debut as “Babalu” got a triangle choke submission win at their UFC 55 match. Chael Sonnen announced his retirement from MMA competition in June of last year and subsequently failed a random drug test. Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral last competed in MMA taking two fights in Bellator MMA. He retired after two consecutive losses to Jacob Noe and Mikhail Zayats.
