The UFC is sparing no expense when it comes to this year’s Memorial day weekend card UFC 187.
The promotion announced today that the stacked May 23rd card will feature two title bouts and a well rounded main card to boot.
In the night’s main event UFC Light-heavyweight Champion Jon Jones will defend his title against the surging Anthony Johnson. Jones is 21-1 on his career most recently defeating Daniel Cormier at UFC 183. The victory was not without controversy as the incumbent champion tested positive for cocaine in a pre-fight drug screening.
Johnson is currently on a nine fight winning streak with notable victories over Phil Davis, Antônio Rogério Nogueira, and Andrei Arlovski. In his last outing, Johnson defeated former number one contender Alexander Gustafsson via first round TKO.
In the co-main event, UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman will look to make it three straight successful title defenses when he takes on former UFC Light-heavyweight Champion Vitor Belfort. Weidman is undefeated in his career with two victories over long time Middleweight champion Anderson Silva. “The All-American” defeated Lyoto Machida in his last bout via unanimous decision at UFC 175 in July 2014.
Belfort is riding a three fight knockout streak with victories over Dan Henderson, Michael Bisping, and Luke Rockhold. A victory over Weidman would make Belfort the third fighter to ever hold titles in to weight classes in the UFC. The other two are Randy Couture (Heavyweight and Light-heavyweight) and BJ Penn (Welterweight and Lightweight).
The card will get an additional boost of energy as top ranked Lightweights Donald Cerrone and Khabib Nurmagomedov face-off on the main card. Cerrone is on a seven fight win streak and picked up the biggest win of his career in his last bout, defeating former champion Benson Henderson by decision. The undefeated Nurmagomedov would solidify his number on contender spot with a win over Cerrone. Nurmagomedov has picked up notable wins over current Lightweight title challenger Rafael Dos Anjos and Gleison Tibau.
Also on the main card is a Heavyweight bout between former training partners as Travis Browne takes on former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski. Browne is looking to win his second straight after TKOing Brendan Schaub in his last outing while Arlovksi will be looking to continue his hot streak after knocking out Antonio Silva.
Opening up the main card will be a flyweight bout between former title contenders Joseph Benavidez and John Moraga. Both fighters are coming off back-to-back wins and will be looking to take another step in their quest for another title shot.
Also announced for the card is a lightweight bout between UFC debutants Islam Makhachev and Leo Kuntz.
