Fans booed the roof off of The Wells Fargo Center in the pro wrestling hotbed and birth place of Extreme Championship Wrestling, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Most of the uproar circled around two parts of the 30 man over-the-top-rope battle royal main event. One was incredibly early on when the winner of last year’s WrestleMania main event winner and the recently returned, Daniel Bryan, was eliminated from the match. The other was in the end of the contest that seemed too predictable to most wrestling fans.
The WWE creative team has been working frantically to place the fan favorite in a marquee match at the show of shows coming up at WrestleMania 31. PWInsider is reporting that Bryan will go on to face another returning superstar in a WrestleMania rematch of a WrestleMania rematch.
Yes, that was worded correctly. Bryan will take on former WWE Champion Sheamus. Sheamus was last seen being beaten by Rusev, the runner up in this year’s Royal Rumble for the United States Title.
Sheamus fought Bryan at Wrestlemania 27 in a Lumberjack match for the same strap. After just over 4 minutes of action, the bout was declared a no-contest because all the lumberjacks brawled within the ring, thus prompting former Smackdown General Manager Teddy Long to play his hand. In his hand was an idea to have a Battle Royale of all the combatants, which The Great Khali went on to win.
The very next year at WrestleMania 28 the pair met again for Daniel Bryan’s World Heavyweight Title. Many thought this would be Bryan’s WreslteMania moment and his official coming out party. However, just like the fans that thought a returning Daniel Bryan would win the 2015 Royal Rumble…they were wrong.
After only 18 official seconds of in-ring action based on the timekeeper’s clock, Bryan kissed his then on-screen girlfriend AJ Lee. Then, he turned around to eat Sheamus’s signature move, the Brogue Kick. Sheamus quickly pinned the stunned Daniel Bryan and became the new World Heavyweight Champion.
If this match comes to fruition, it will mean that the Bryan vs Kane feud will officially end soon. Before Daniel’s injury and absence, he last defended his WWE World Heavyweight Title against Kane in the main event of last year’s Extreme Rules Pay-Per-View. When He returned the pair picked up right where they left off and have had a series of matches since, all of which Bryan has won.
