Nate Diaz has been the first to speak publicly regarding the UFC’s signing of 36 year old former WWE star Phil “CM Punk” Brooks, stating in an interview with MMAjunkie that, “It’s horrible for the sport.” Diaz was asked for his opinion on the record-less amateur when he vented, “I don’t dig it…He has got no fights. I know he’s a big draw. I looked him up. Everyone’s going to buy tickets. It’s going to be great for the venue and the UFC, but at the same time, it downgrades all the fighters.”

“He might do great, but why does he get a chance? He’s an amateur. You’re going to put an amateur in there with pros? That makes us all amateurs, so I think it’s ridiculous. As far as I’m concerned, f-ck him, f-ck the whole situation. Anybody who takes that fight is tripping.”

“If I want to, I can’t go play in the NBA – not even Stefan Struve’s big ass,” Diaz said. “He can’t go play in the NBA if he wants to because he feels like making a change. For a publicity thing? They wouldn’t pay him no money, and they wouldn’t even let him play. It’s ridiculous.”

“I don’t think you should just let some millionaire WWE guy just come on over and play a little game, like have fun with his career. I’m over here busting my ass, fighting for 10 years and doing my thing and having a serious job that I have to do for this. And this guy is going to come over and probably get paid more than everyone in the room.”

“I’m sorry, but this guy’s making a joke out of my serious life and getting compensated more for it, don’t mean no harm on him, but I don’t think it’s right.”

Diaz also believes that Brooks should have taken the path of former WWE star turned UFC heavyweight and get an MMA win outside of the UFC before he stepped into the octagon with the world’s best fighters. In CM Punk’s defense, he does put to use a wide array of MMA-style moves as a wrestler, such as the Mongolian Chop. The Mongolian Chop is basically the act of ‘karate chopping’ both the opponent’s shoulders and sides of the neck with the edges of the hands simultaneously.

CM Punk has has also been known to use the Anaconda Vise, also referred to as the arm triangle. This choke has the wrestler wrap his arm underneath the opponent’s nearest armpit and across the chest. The maneuver can be used in MMA as a submission maneuver, or a transition hold, usually causing the opponent to fall backwards into an arm triangle. He also uses Muay Tai kicks such as the thip (footjab) and the te chiang (roundhouse kick) which may prove useful in the UFC. We’ll see if these moves will come into play for Brooks and if he can relay his WWE training into real MMA wins. Brooks’ first opponent has yet to be determined, but his UFC debut will be largely viewed by casual fans, MMA fans, and WWE fans because of the intriguing storyline that will surround the fight.

Diaz (17-10 MMA, 12-8 UFC), on the other hand, had a rough night at UFC on Fox 13. He missed a public workout session, weighed in over 4 pounds heavy and suffered an overwhelming unanimous decision loss to Rafael Dos Anjos.
