Danny García Aims for Mayweather

Danny García was once widely considered to be a real contender to take on Mayweather but after recent bouts, some are suggesting that the WBA/WBC light welterweight champion has been cushioning his 29-0 record. In March, Garciá was supposed to have dominated Mauricio Herrera, but only won by majority decision in a match that could have possibly gone the other way. In August, he somewhat redeemed himself against Rod Salka (19-4, 3 KO’s) when he quickly knocked him out in the second round, but that was to be expected.

García’s next fight against Viktor Postol (26-0, 11 knockouts) should be more evenly matched. Viktor Postol is coming off an 11th-round knockout over Selçuk Aydın on May 17th at the Los Angeles Forum, which earned Postol a mandatory title shot against García. This fight will be make or break for García. If he wins, he may once again be considered a viable contender to fight Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

García was on track to have the respect needed to face Mayweather before he performed poorly against Herrera, not to mention that the public viewed this match as an avoidance of Lamont Peterson.
As of today, García is an undefeated fighter who has knocked out more than half of his opponents (17). If he can continue his winning streak against the likes of fighters like Viktor Postol, WBO champ Chris Algieri or former champ Lamont Peterson, he may regain his superstar status that he held after knocking out Amir Khan (who is widely considered to be Mayweather’s next opponent.)

Do you think Danny García will have earned a title shot against Mayweather with a win over Postol? If Danny García has one more fight to prove his worth for a title shot, who should he fight next?
