Following a dominating KO victory over Tarec Saffiedine in UFC Fight Night: Halifax, Canada, Dana White has confirmed that Rory MacDonald (18-2) will get a title shot against the winner of UFC 181’s Robbie Lawler vs. Johnny Hendricks. “Ares” has been on a roll in the UFC, winning 8 of his last 9 fights over major names like Nate Diaz, B.J. Penn, Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley before taking his last KO win over Tarec Saffiediene.
White told the Canadian Press on Wednesday: “It’s pretty impossible to deny Rory that, whoever comes out of that Hendricks-Lawler fight, he’s the next guy in line.” To sweeten the deal, the welterweight contender will have the chance to earn the title in his home country: “absolutely, positively, without a doubt, be in Canada. He’s next in line and that fight will be in Canada.”
Robbie has never fought against Johnny Hendricks, but he has lost a split decision to Robbie Lawler in UFC 167. While he has lost the close bout with Lawler, there appears to be no quest for vengeance on his part. In a recent interview with MMA fighting, he has stated he has no preference on who he would face for a title shot: “I just want to fight the best man, so, whoever.”
While fans of “RoMac” eagerly await the results of Robbie Lawler vs. Johnny Hendricks, Rory will face multiple time no-gi champion J.T. Torres in a no-gi grappling match at Metamoris 5. Metamoris has showcased numerous world-class grapplers as well as big MMA names with competitors like Chael Sonnen, Josh Barnett and Brendan Schaub. Rory MacDonald is a no-gi jiu-jitsu black belt under David Lea, and an honest-to-goodness grappling battle will be sure to keep his skills on point for the cage.
