Chris Algieri, 20-0, dodged a bullet in his last fight. With a swollen eye, he was knocked down in the first round by Ruslan Provodnikov. It wasn’t pretty but Algieri continued to fight and won by unanimous decision, becoming the WBO Light Welterweight Champion.
This came as quite a shock to Ruslan Provodnikov. “I think I did what I promised to do,” Provodnikov said after the fight. “My face, you see, I’m good. I did my job. To me, it felt like he was running all night. How do you win a fight like that? Look at my face and look at his. If I was running like Chris, you guys would be falling asleep. I won’t let this loss get to me. The HBO [ringside announcers] gave nine more rounds to me. The local judges saw it the other way. If I looked the way he did, they would have stopped the fight. I think it’s unfair.”
While he did win, Algieri’s decision victory against Provodnikov raises some questions about his potential for success when he faces “Machine Gun” Manny Pacquiao on November 22, 2014 in Macau, China.
Despite accumulating some notable wins against Emmanuel Taylor on Febraury 14th, 2014 and Jose Peralta Alejo on February 23rd, 2013, both victories were awarded via unanimous decision. This has caused some pundits to speculate Algieri’s ability to go the distance with a legend like Pacquiao.
Are the concerns warranted? It may be impossible to tell for certain, but it’s quite likely that we will see an aggressive run for the win when Algieri finally faces Pacquiao. Win, lose or draw, keep checking back and we’ll keep you covered with updates to this and other boxing news, as it happens!
