U.S. Marshals service reported that MMA fighter “War Machine” was arrested this afternoon in Simi Valley on suspicion of brutally beating his ex-girlfriend, Christy Mack, in Las Vegas last week.
The fighter, Jonathan Koppenhaver, was taken into custody at about 2:30 p.m., without incident, while at the Extended Stay America hotel in Simi Valley. Koppenhaver, currently lives in San Diego, but was a former resident of Simi Valley. According to the Simi Valley Police Department, investigators developed information that he had been staying there.
Once apprehended, Koppenhaver was taken to the Ventura County Jail for booking on multiple (7) warrants from Nevada.
Reality TV star, and bounty hunter, Duane “Dog” Chapman, vowed to track down “War Machine” and bring him to justice. On Thursday, Chapman appeared in San Diego, first stopping by Undisputed in Downtown San Diego, the gym where Koppenhaver trains, then to “War Machine’s” San Diego apartment, but he was not there.
Now that War Machine is in custody he will likely be questioned by police and the prosecutorial process of this criminal matter should commence. It is unknown how quickly his trial will be heard or resolved and there are also many details specific to the case that both have yet to be made public or are known to investigators.
While his refusal to submit to authorities on his own volition will play a role in his prosecution and defense, the amount of time that has passed since the incident will make finding forensic evidence more challenging (though not impossible) for investigators.
Given his history and current representation in the eye of the public, much the chance of success for his defense will rely on the proficiency of his defense attorney. However, even if he is somehow acquitted or found not guilty during his trial, it is anyone’s guess whether we will ever see this fighter in any cage (outside of a jail cell) for some time to come!
