A highly anticipated bout between two of the best kick boxers on the planet ended in tragedy. After defeating their respective opponents in the semifinals of the GLORY 15 light heavyweight tournament, Gokhan Saki and Tyrone Spong were set for a rematch of a 2009 bout in which Saki knocked Spong out in the fourth.
Just halfway through the first round, Spong threw a left low kick followed by a right low kick, the latter of which was checked by Saki. Spong’s leg broke over Saki’s shin in a lighting fast incident that shocked those in attendance at the Ulker Arena is Istanbul, as well as those watching on Spike TV.
Spong (74-7-1, 1 NC) fell back and slid as he attempted to rise back to his feet, until he was sure that his leg was in no shape to do so. Luckily, it appeared that shock had set in, at least in some capacity or sense of wishful thinking.
A disappointed Saki ran over to Spong after a moment and comforted him as the ringside physicians rushed in to Spong’s aide.
Spong is being flown home to Boca Raton, Florida to get corrective surgery on the leg and receive a prognosis about his fighting career for the foreseeable year.
