While the news of a return for UFC heavyweight Stefan Struve (29-6) is fantastic news, the clearance given by his doctors in the Netherlands is just one step, albeit, a substantial one.
His manager, Lex McMahon of Alchemist management went on the MMAHour to share the news of Struve having passed his medical clearance with his doctors in the Netherlands.
“Very exciting news with Stefan, he was actually cleared by his doctor in the Netherlands.”
Struve went on Twitter to confirm the news that he has indeed been cleared by his doctors in the Netherlands but that he still faces a few steps before ultimate clearance to return to the Octagon.
The ‘couple last things’ that Struve mentions aren’t exactly clear but could be some minor paperwork on the UFC’s part to finalize the clearance and to set Struve up with his return bout, (via MMAJunkie) “They’ve got everything — my doctor’s letter, medical files and everything. Everything is there, and we’re just waiting on the UFC to do their thing.”
Struve last fought Mark Hunt in March of 2013. He lost that bout via TKO in the final round. This loss marked just his fourth in 13 UFC bouts.
Regardless of what steps remain for Struve, these steps in the right direction are welcome news from an unfortunate break from fighting for Struve.
