Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino can fantasize about retiring Ronda Rousey all she wants, it’s not going to happen anytime soon. In fact, UFC President Dana White says she isn’t even close to signing with the promotion.
“The crazy thing about talking about this is there is no negotiations or anything like that,” White said in an interview with MMAJunkie. “She’s a 145-pounder.”
Justino’s 12-1 MMA record means little to White, who doesn’t plan on adding a featherweight division in the near future. Furthermore, she lost last weekend’s inaugural Lion Fight Women’s Welterweight Championship match to Jorina Baars. Even if Justino moves down to a bantamweight, many consider the loss a sign that she isn’t ready for Rousey.
“She’s being mismanaged,” White said. “She’s been mismanaged since the day that this whole thing went down, and she will continue to be mismanaged right until her career is over.”
White has adamantly denied any contract talks with Justino. One reason is because of her former manager, Tito Ortiz. The former UFC light heavyweight champion stepped down as Justino’s negotiator earlier this year because of his relationship with White. The two were close at a time but have grown apart since Ortiz signed with Bellator.
“I don’t understand how Dana lets his hatred towards me hurt the UFC and the fans by not making this (Rousey) fight,” Ortiz said in a statement released in February.
Many consider Justino the top pound-for-pound female MMA fighter in the world. She’s a former Invicta and Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Champion and holds notable victories over Gina Carano, Hitomi Akano, and Marloes Coenen. Apparently, that isn’t enough for the biggest MMA promotion in the world.
Whether the UFC president holds a grudge or rightfully believes that Justino should be in the UFC is a moot point. She’s in a high weight class and White says she is being mismanaged. In the end, his word is the final word.
