Will Chope has been on a roller coaster in the past few weeks. Scheduled to fight Diego Brandao at UFC Fight Night 38, Chope weighed in on the night before, hitting the mark and setting up his featherweight bout with Brandao as he sought the first win of his UFC career.
Then, details quickly surfaced after an article by Jeremy Botter revealed that Chope had been dishonorably discharged from the Air Force after assaulting his ex-wife. He was released from the UFC just after the details came to light.
Not to absolve Chope of his past grievances, but his ex-wife released several messages via social media to explain her current relationship with Chope as adults who have moved past this incident and put it behind them, but at that point, Chope’s contract with the UFC had already been null and void.
Chope and his ex-wife recently released a youtube video which attempts to explain the situation a little better to perhaps help him regain his place in the promotion, although, their stance is firm.
UFC Official Statement: “Tonight’s featherweight bout between Will Chope and Diego Brandao has been canceled after UFC officials were made aware of Chope’s previous military conviction. The UFC does not condone behavior of this nature whatsoever and Chope has been released from his contract.
Brandao will receive both his show and win money for the bout.”
