Bellator Lightweight Tournament Opening Round:

Tim Welch (10-4) vs. Derek Campos (13-3)

Round 1: Welch circles right away as both fighters feel each other out a bit. Campos lands a nice uppercut and pushes Welch to the fence, they quickly seperate and Tim slightly lands a head kick. Welch misses a looping left hook, and Campos misses hooks of his own. Campos lands a double jab then a slight knee to the body, Welch partially connects with a superman punch and is jabbed by Derek once more. Tim begins to jab and Campos misses a spinning back kick. Campos lands a right uppercut but eats a jab from Welch. Tim misses a head kick and eats jabs from Derek, Campos lands more jabs to Welch who slips at the end of the round.

Round 2: Derek lands a left hook to open things up, then an uppercut to the body followed by another hook wobbles Welch against the fence and Derek enters “finishing mode” and swarms Tim, dropping him momentarily with punches then he takes him down and passes to full mount and looks to finish with a head-arm choke. He then abandons the submission and enters Welch’s half guard. Both fighters return to their feet, Derek misses a looping uppercut but lands a counter left, Welch looks as though he’s regained composure but eats another left from Campos. Campos is cut on his bottom lip but catches Welch again with a good left hand and takes him down again to end the round.

Round 3: Campos lands a left jab then trips Welch and enters Tim’s guard. Welch tries to get up but is muscled back down, Campos transitions to side control but Welch powers out and stands up, only to fall seemingly from fatigue. Campos uses a cradle and enters half-guard again, then back to full guard. Crowd starts to boo then Campos lands a big left punch on the ground followed by two more. Derek then stands and kicks the legs of Welch, Campos then goes down and takes Tim’s back but is quickly reversed ending the fight with Tim in Derek’s guard.

Official Result: Derek Campos defeats Tim Welch via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Marcin Held (16-3) vs. Rodrigo Cavalheiro (14-2)

Round 1: Held comes in swinging and going forward, he gets Rodrigo to engage and Marcin quickly takes Cavalheiro down. Held drops for a patented heel hook and secures then Rodrigo rolls but Held switches to a toe hold and the fight ends faster than the transition as Rodrigo taps out.

Official Result: Marcin Held defeats Rodrigo Cavalheiro via Submission (toe-hold) at 1:56 of Round 1
David Rickels (15-2) vs. Patricky Pitbull (11-5)

Round 1: Rickels comes forward with punches but doesn’t land, and he repeats this for the first two minutes then lands an outside leg kick. Pitbull lands a nice right hand and is answered with a light head kick. Patricky lands a good jab, then a right cross, Rickels lands a push kick then throws a combo but eats a Pitbull uppercut that momentarily wobbles “Caveman”. David then puts Pitbull against the cage and lands combos of knees and punches. They get off the cage and Patricky lands a right to the body and takes Rickels down. David slaps Pitbull’s ears to end the round.

Round 2: Pitbull opens things up with a solid right hand, then a massive left that hurts Rickels bad and another left knocks The Caveman out colder than in his cave. Pitbull waits on the ref to step in and lands another incredible un-contested blow that adds another bad dream to the sleeping Rickels and the bout is finally stopped.

Official Result: Patricky Pitbull defeats David Rickels via KO at :54 of Round 2

Highly passionate MMA Journalist, and I've followed the sport ever since my favorite fighter, Vitor Belfort won the heavyweight tournament at UFC 12. After that I've tried to go to every local MMA event around the Gulf Coast and surrounding areas and decided to make it a point to have a career in some aspect in the fighting sport other than fighting in general (didn't want to ruin my face). I'm currently enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana University working towards a degree in Communication. I cover MMA, Boxing and Football for The Daily Star newspaper in my hometown of Hammond, Louisiana, in addition to working as a promotional writer for a local Boxing promotion known as BoxnCar and I cover boxing for 8countnews.com however SciFighting.com is my home. My main goal is to bring more publicity to MMA in my area and to the sport as a whole as all of us involved with the sport are merely scratching the surface and laying the foundation of what mixed martial arts competition will be further down the road.
