UFC 171 will be remembered for its incredible main event which crowned a new welterweight champion. Johny Hendricks (16-2) battled Robbie Lawler (22-10) in a five round classic. The bout was extremely close headed in to the last round and even then, both fighters found success. Lawler used his speed and footwork well as Hendricks displayed a mixed striking attack that didn’t rely on takedowns or one-punch knockouts.
The end result was a very close decision for Hendricks who won three rounds on the judge’s scorecards.
Hendricks’ win made him the first new welterweight champion since Matt Serra defeated Georges St-Pierre in 2006 and the card shaped the welterweight division for the first half of the year, producing a line of contenders for Hendricks to defend his new title against.
After the fight both fighters gave each other kind words over Twitter to congratulate and thank one another on a mutually excellent show to cap off UFC 171. It was a great ending to their brief, title-fuels rivalry that was less about verbal warfare and trash talking and more about the prestige that comes as an added bonus to the win over the other.
