UFC 171 was filled with twists and turns as he carved out the welterweight division for the foreseeable future. Three high-profile bouts on the main card and a solid preliminary bout between two talented 170-pounders did well to create an environment where the winners from last night’s card can thrive.
The main event was a fantastic bout between Johny Hendricks (16-2) and Robbie Lawler (22-10, 1 NC) which was brought down to the last round, one that Hendricks stole to edge out Lawler and become the new UFC welterweight champion.
Hendricks and Lawler were rewarded $50,000 for ‘Fight of the Night’ for their bout which bolsters Hendricks’ exultation, while serving as a meager yet welcome consolation prize for Lawler.
The two ‘Performance of the Night’ bonuses were given to Ovince St. Preux and Dennis Bermudez.
St. Preux (15-5) opened up the main card by choking out Nikita Krylov (16-4) in the first round of their bout with the rarely seen von flue choke.
Bermudez (13-3) dominated his opponent Jimy Hettes (11-2) en route to a TKO win and a bonus of his own.
