UFC 171 will crown a new welterweight champion in the wake of former champion Georges St-Pierre’s hiatus from competition. Johny Hendricks (15-2) will fight Robbie Lawler (22-9, 1 NC) for the vacant belt. It’s a fight marked with redemption for Hendricks, who dropped a close decision to the former champ last October, and resurgence for Lawler who began his professional career at 19-years-old, and still fights today, with a 3-0 record since his return to the UFC.
The co-main event can produce, with a strong performance, the next contender for the welterweight strap as Carlos Condit (29-7) will fight Tyron Woodley (12-2) in a highly anticipated and stylistic clash that is an early candidate for ‘Fight’ or ‘Performance of the Night’.
