Recently, WMMA was rumor-ridden with Gina Carano vs. Ronda Rousey. Ever since UFC commentator, Joe Rogan, went on an radio show (indicating that there’s a big fight coming up), the MMA world speculated that a superfight between Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey may be imminent.
While something newsworthy is imminent, Dana White confirmed the rumor false with MMA Junkie. The MMA world loves a superfight, and Gina Carano, before Ronda Rousey, was the “whole package” female superstar. But if not Carano, then who else is out there?
There’s Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, the former Strikeforce and current Invicta champion that is on a 12 fight win streak. Cyborg is ranked #2 pound for pound female fighter in the world by MMA Rising, but she’s a weight class above Ronda. For the match to happen, Cyborg must first drop weight, and that would indeed be a superfight.
But Dana White has repeated said that Cyborg must prove that she’s capable of dropping weight (Cyborg has stated before that she’d “die if she dropped weight”, though she now chalks it as a misunderstanding due to her english).
So if not Cyborg, then who else? There’s the amateur kickboxing champion that turned professional boxing champion Holly Holm. This match would be yet another big fight and a classic “striker vs. grappler” matchup. Holly Holm a dangerous striker, finishing the first 5 of her opponents by stoppage, but to be competitive with Rousey it seems that she’d need a few more fights first.
What will it be? Any of these 3 fights would be fantastic for WMMA and they’d most likely headline an event. Stay tuned to find out!
