Jon Jones’ next fight is more than a month away, but the UFC Light-Heavyweight kingpin is having a hard time staying out of the headlines this week.

Jones engaged in a war of words with former UFC lightweight and Daniel Cormier training partner Tyson Griffin on Twitter. Griffin tweeted the following reaction to Jones saying that Cormier needs more top wins to claim his shot at the belt:

Jones stayed away from publicly confronting Griffin, opting to send him private messages on twitter in response. Take a look at Jones’ messages below:

Jones later tweeted the following in response to the day’s twitter scuffle:

The Twitter scuffle could provide a significant step towards Jones squaring off with Cormier in his next bout. It’s obvious that Jones has become a bit annoyed with fans and media types calling for him to fight Cormier. Jones may want to squash all talk of him “ducking” Cormier and fight him as soon as possible.

One thing that is concerning about this story is Jones’ inability to stay away from meaningless confrontations. A fighter as skilled as Jones only needs to be destructive inside the Octagon, not on social media. The UFC has struggled to maintain a positive image for Jones and small twitter scuffles like this make it no easier. Jones needs to learn that his words are scrutinized more than any other fighter and needs to act accordingly.

Either way, fans will see Jon Jones in action next month when he takes on Glover Texeira April 26 at UFC 172 in Baltimore, Maryland. The card will air live on pay-per-view following preliminary action on Fox Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Daniel Reveles
Born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, Daniel Reveles' interest in Mixed Martial Arts began at the age of fourteen while attending a Fantasy Football draft at a Friend's house. That day Daniel's buddies ordered UFC 88 on Pay-Per-View featuring lauded striker and hometown hero Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell squaring off with Division One Wrestler “Suga” Rashad Evans. After seeing “the wrestler” Rashad Evans put the Ice Man out cold with an overhand right, Daniel became instantly hooked by the unpredictability of the sport. Since that moment Daniel has become well versed in Mixed Martial Arts History and has yet to miss an event. Daniel is currently studying at the University of California Santa Barbara to receive his Bachelor's Degree in Communications with hopes of becoming the next big media mogul. When he is not watching MMA or studying you can find Daniel hanging out with his family and friends or taking in a game at the lovely Dodger Stadium.
