Just a day before the tenth season of Bellator MMA kicks off, the promotion, in association with their glove manufacturer, Everlast, has unveiled its new glove that aims to improve fighter safety, on both sides of the glove.

The first issue raised in a new design is the safety of the opponent’s eyes which the new curved POWERLOCK design will hopefully negate. Like the Pride FC days, the new glove holds a slight curve that bring the fingers back in towards the user so that if they extend their hands, the fingers are not pointing directly at the face of the other fighter. They also promote added safety to the hands and wrists of the fighter wearing the gloves.

The news was announced in a press release given by Bellator MMA.

A new padding has also been placed inside the glove which doesn’t take away power, but instead shields the ‘impact zone’ of the fist to help preserve the first and fifth metacarpal of the hand, which is the bone extending out directly from the knuckle towards the ends of the fingers. This could help in cases where fighters become defensive and apprehensive if they suffer a broken hand early on in the fight.

They will debut the gloves on February 28th during their debut event for season 10. Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney released a statement in the press release to highlight Bellator’s efforts towards fighter safety, “Fighter safety is absolutely paramount in every decision we make, and when our team sat down with Everlast, both of our company’s shared one goal: take the next step in advancing the protection for every athlete that steps into our cage,” said Rebney. “We’ve already had countless fighters test this new glove in full sparring and the reviews have been off the charts. Working in partnership with Everlast we have created a glove that not only improves fighter comfort, but also lowers the risk of injury from both an offensive and defensive perspective. We’ve really hit a home run here, and I can’t wait for all of our athletes to strap on this new glove beginning February 28th.”
