The greatest boxer of our time, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0) has announced that his next bout will take place against Argentinean, Marcos Maidana (35-3) on May 3rd.
The fight will be broadcast on Showtime PPV and will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, a mainstay for Mayweather for the last eight consecutive fights.
Mayweather’s last time out was a one-sided bout that further solidified his argument for the greatest boxer of all time as he absolutely routed Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last September. Alvarez was expected to be perhaps the biggest challenge in the impeccable career of Mayweather but despite a controversial scorecard from C.J. Ross who ruled the fight a draw, despite media for the fight being heavily one-sided in a win for Mayweather.
The fight made Mayweather a record $41.5 million for the fight alone. Mayweather also holds contracts with the MGM Grand and the fight was promoted by his own promotion, Mayweather Promotions. The PPV did 2.2 million buys and grossed $150 million with a price point of $65/$75 for Standard/High definitions.
His opponent, Maidana will return from an upset win over the previously undefeated Adrien Broner. Maidana won the WBA welterweight title with the victory over Broner and earned the biggest opportunity in modern-day boxing when he participates in the spectacle that is a Floyd Mayweather bout.
The determination of the opponent for Mayweather was left up to the fans who were allowed to vote between Maidana and Amir Khan. Mayweather made the bout official with a tweet, accompanied by social media network ‘Shots’ of which Mayweather is associated.
