Bellator Extends Broadcast Reach, Re-Signs Middleweight Champion

2014 is poised to be a good year for Bellator who already made waves in the MMA community even before the debut of its tenth season with a contract offer to brief free agent Gilbert Melendez. Unfortunately for them, Melendez’s contract was matched by the UFC and he will be back in the Octagon, but Bellator announced today that they will be making an early debut on FOX Sports in Latin America, as well as a move on the Middle East and North Africa.

A deal made between Bellator and the Latin American branch of FOX Sports promised a broadcast debut in 2015 but with a restructuring of that deal, Bellator will bring its product to FOX Sports Latin America starting with this Friday’s Bellator 110 card, the tenth season opener.

Bellator 110 is headlined by the second of two light-heavyweight tournament bouts as former Bellator light heavyweight champion Christian M’Pumbu takes on Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.

The next announcement came in the form of an international expansion as Bellator has come to an agreement with OSN, the biggest pay-TV network in the Middle East and North African markets (abbreviated MENA).

Bellator CEO expressed his excitement about the opportunity for Bellator in a press release sent out today: “OSN is an absolute force in the Middle East and Northern Africa, and as Bellator continues to expand into key regions worldwide, OSN was the penultimate partner for our brand in 2014 and beyond,” Rebney said. “From Algeria to Yemen, Bellator is now on the premier network for MMA across the entire MENA region, and we couldn’t be happier.”

In a bit of fighter news, Bellator has re-signed their middleweight champion, Alexander Shlemenko (49-7). Holding just two losses over the past 27 fights spanning almost seven years, Shlemenko is seemingly unstoppable in the Bellator ranks. He won his title back in February of 2013 with a knockout over Maiquel Falcao and has since defended twice.

A scheduled title defense against Brennan Ward is official for Bellator 114 on March 28th.
