The first fight on the PPV was a welterweight bout between TUF: The Smashes veteran Robert Whittaker and Stephen Thompson.

Thompson has won his previous 2 bouts and finished his last opponent, Chris Clements back in September.

Whittaker came back from a tough decision loss to Court McGee.

Two talented welterweights would vie to open up the UFC 170 PPV with their hand raised.

Round 1: A hard jab from Whittaker started the bout off. Thompson’s hand were low as always and his speed and the kicks were superb and crafty. Whittaker was the aggressor  but the head movement and slips of Thompson were on point. Thompson landed a fantastic counter straight and hurt Whittaker badly. He continued on a now wobbly Whittaker who tried to find Thompson through glazed-over eyes. Thompson was relentless with his attack and finished Whittaker.

Official Decision: Stephen Thompson defeats Robert Whittaker via TKO at of Round 1.

Pretty good fight. Whitaker’s timing couldn’t find Thompson.
