Ronda Rousey may have lost all her street credibility when it comes to hardcore professional wrestling fans.
The woman who got her nickname from “Rowdy” Roddy Piper just committed the equivalent of saying you like Jay Leno more than David Letterman, Bon Jovi more than U2, or Tom Cruise more than Daniel Day-Lewis
Rousey said she likes “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson more than CM Punk.
When asked by a reporter at a recent media scrum, Rousey uttered these words:
“I have to say The Rock [is my favorite],” Rousey said. “I do. I love me some Rock. “Sorry, Punk!”
If you are a fan of the sport, not the entertainment, picking The Rock over Punk is almost sacrilegious.
With his dynamic personality and muscular physique, The Rock became one professional wrestling’s most successful stars. He left the WWE for Hollywood, where he has become a Hollywood box office success. The Rock is a Hollywood A-Lister. Inside the ring, however, The Rock was never one of the sport’s great performers. He was athletic, but would never be considered one of the sport’s top in-ring performers.
Punk, on the other hand, is one of the best workers in the business. A great high-flier, coupled with strong mat and technical skills, Punk is the kind of wrestler who makes professional wrestling look real.
He’s also in many ways the opposite of The Rock; whereas The Rock craves the spotlight, Punk is anti-social and prefers to do his talking inside the ring.
Punk, in wrestling storyline is largely regarded as “The Best in the World.”
Neither is currently involved with the WWE. Punk walked out last month, unhappy with his feud with Triple H. The Rock hasn’t wrestled since April of 2013, when he tore his stomach muscles during a match with John Cena.
Rousey will battle Sara McMann at UFC 170 on Saturday night.
