UFC Fight Night 36 Results: Ronaldo Souza Decisions Francis Carmont

The co-main event was here and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza took on team Tri-Star member Francis Carmont.

Souza was the favorite coming in to this bout but would have a tall task in front of him if he wanted to continue his finishing streak since joining the UFC. He last TKO’d perennial top contender Yushin Okami in a blistering performance that help do pen people’s eyes to the improved striking that he possesses.

Carmont last took out Costas Philippou at UFC 165 last September and despite the performance being one that wasn’t exactly memorable, it was a win over a ranked opponent and a step in the right direction.

Round 1: Jacare closes the distance one minute into the round, takes Carmont’s back, and brings the fight to the floor. Carmont defending multiple choke attempts from Jacare. Jacare nearly submits Carmont with a rear-naked choke but is unable to finish the choke. Carmont reverses position and finishes the round in Jacare’s guard. SciFighting scores the round 10-9 Jacare. 

Round 2: Jacare backs Carmont up the fence with big punches. Carmont circles out and regains the center of the Octagon. Carmont with a nice outside leg kick. Jacare pressuring Carmont and throwing heavy leather. Carmont fires back with a huge right hand then transitions into a takedown attempt. Jacare separates and throws a right hand that misses. Jacare throws a loopy right hook but gets countered by a Carmont left. Carmont gaining confidence. Jacare pushes forward for a takedown that gets stuffed along the fence. SciFighting scores the round 10-9 Carmont

Round 3: Carmont opens up the third with a strong outside leg kick. Jacare has been unable to close the distance on Carmont since the start of the second round. Carmont over commits to a few punches and gets taken down. Jacare moves straight into mount. Carmont gives up his back but works his way back into half guard. Carmont turns slightly to get up but only leaves room for Jacare to take his back. Jacare sneaks his arm across Carmont’s face and briefly attempts a neck crank. Carmont desperately trying to get to his feet but Jacare is suffocating on the ground. The round ends with Jacare attempting a rear-naked choke. SciFighting scores the round 10-9 Jacare and the fight 29-28 for Jacare.
