This Saturday night, the UFC returns to Brazil for UFC Fight Night 36: Machida vs. Mousasi.
The main event is a middleweight contender bout between Lyoto Machida (20-4) and Gegard Mousasi (34-3-2). Both men are former light heavyweight champions in the UFC and Strikeforce respectively and will now try to get the chance to fight for a title in another weight class.
Machida made his middleweight debut last October when he knocked out Mark Munoz with a spectacular head kick in the opening round of their fight. Machida went 11-4 in the UFC’s light heavyweight division before making the drop to 185.
His opponent, Mousasi, has fought in several different divisions, most recently at 205-pounds as he defeated Ilir Latifi in his Octagon debut back in April of 2013. His return to the middleweight division is his first bout there since 2008. He defeated Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza for the inaugural DREAM middleweight title.
The co-main event is also a middleweight fight, this one between two men with title shots on the horizon, given a strong performance this Saturday. The first is former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza (19-3, 1 NC).
Souza is 2-0 in the UFC since his 2013 debut and has finished both his opponents — Chris Camozzi via Submission, Yushin Okami via TKO — and hopes for a win over the surging Francis Carmont (22-7) who will try to extend his current win streak to 12.
Carmont’s last outing was one that he made look easy as he controlled Costas Philippou for three rounds during their UFC 165 bout last September.
Doors open at 1:30 p.m. BRST local time on Friday for the weigh-ins. Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos will host a special fan Q&A for those in attendance, just prior to the weigh-ins at 3:00 p.m. BRST local time. Dos Santos and Octagon girls Jhenny Andrade and Camila Oliveira will also host an autograph session as well just before the Q&A, at 2 p.m. BRST local time.
Time & Location:
The UFC Fight Night 36 weigh-ins will take place at the Arena Jaragua in Jaragua do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil on Friday, February 14th.
