In one of the strangest stories of the year, UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva was reportedly apprehended by Ft. Lauderdale Police late Thursday night after an armed stand off at his Florida home.

The conflict apparently began at the Pablo Popovitch Mixed Martial Arts Academy, where Silva was rumored to have brought a gun and threatened members in the gym. He later fled to his residence at 2041 Coral Heights Blvd. where he barricaded himself from police until finally surrendering peacefully to the Broward County Sheriff’s officials.

SciFighting contacted the Broward County Sheriff’s Office to confirm the reports although the suspect hadn’t yet arrived for booking.  The Sheriff’s Office operator did confirm knowledge of his name and told us his arrival hadn’t happened ‘yet’.

Local NBC Affiliate anchor Adam Kuperstein took to Twitter to report the stand off as it happened.

The call from the hold up at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school was made around 7:45 p.m. ET, just after Silva left. He arrived at his home a few minutes later. A S.W.A.T. team surrounded his home and he was later taken into custody at approximately 11:15 PM.

The UFC released a brief statement on the situation following the initial reports:

Via UFC.com: “This evening, we were made aware of a situation involving Thiago Silva.  We are in the process of gathering the facts and have no further comment at this time.”

Silva was supposed to fight Ovince St. Preux at UFC 171 later this year in a fight that one would have to believe is now off.
