The main event of UFC 169 was a bantamweight title fight between Renan Barao (31-1, 1 NC) and Urijah Faber (30-6). The pair first fought at UFC 149 back in 2012 where Barao won a decision over Faber. They would now fight for the undisputed title, this time, two years down the road from when they first met.
Round 1: Faber looked good coming in on Barao. He was quick with his combinations and covered a lot of ground with his strikes. A few minutes in Faber was cracked with a big counter and put on his back. Faber looked out but he got back up after Barao attacked. Barao didn’t stop and kept coming in on Faber. Faber was hit with a big overhand right and went down after another flurry. Faber was turtled up with Barao throwing shots to the side of Faber’s head. Faber didn’t move and despite a late ‘thumbs up’ from Faber, it looked bad enough for Herb Dean to step in and stop the fight.
Official Decision: Renan Barao defeats Urijah Faber via TKO (punches) at 3:42 of Round 1 to Retain the UFC bantamweight championship.
