The heavyweight bout on the main card was a fight between former champions as Alistair Overeem (36-13, 1 NC) took on Frank Mir (16-8). Both men needed a win here badly as they faced a potential cut from the UFC roster after multiple losses.
Round 1: Overeem struck first. He dropped Mir and jumped on him while throwing shots to the ribs of Mir. Overeem was in complete control and Mir looked like he was about to punch the clock. The fight wasn’t stopped and even with the onslaught from Overeem, Mir was tough and stood back up. A few minutes late Mir dropped for a leg lock but ended up on his back with Overeem in his half guard to end the round.
Round 2: Mir was hit early with a big shot and held in a clinch. A knee from Overeem got in on Mir and hurt his body. They split as Overeem clearly used the clinch to rest. Once they broke, Mir got a takedown on Overeem and got a guillotine locked in. Overeem powered out of it however and got on top. They were stood up by Dan Miragliotta to end the round on the feet.
Round 3: Mir pulled guard on Overeem when he came in tight. Overeem was in the full guard of Mir who looked tired. Overeem let Mir back up and Mir pulled guard again. Overeem controlled him on the mat though and stayed in the guard while dropping shots on Mir’s head. Overeem let him stand and toyed with Mir on the feet. Besides a big cross from Overeem, he simply let the time wind down on a one-sided fight.
Alistair Overeem defeats Frank Mir via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
