Asian-based promotion ONE FC has signed a partnership with TV9, one of just four free-to-air stations in Malaysia. “On behalf of ONE Fighting Championship™, I would like to warmly welcome TV9 on board as a broadcast partner, ONE FC CEO Victor Cui said, This is an exciting time for mixed martial arts in Asia and Malaysia is rapidly becoming a hotbed for the sport. TV9 is a fantastic partner and one of the biggest free-to-air broadcasters in Malaysia and ONE FC is excited at the opportunity to showcase our fighters to millions of homes throughout the country.”
ONE FC recently made headlines by signing former Bellator welt weight champion Ben Askren as he came to a deal with them while negotiations with the UFC fell through around the same time.
Askren has no opponent but his first fight will now be available on TV9, a station that is geared toward a younger demographic in Malaysia. The station reaches 30 million people in the nation.
The deal ushers in a big year for ONE FC who currently holds a 90% share in their market making them, by far, the largest MMA promotion in Asia. As the UFC, WSOF, and Bellator fight (UFC is winning by leaps and bounds), ONE FC has carved a nice corner of the globe to call its own until it begins to expand even further and with just 14 major events, it has plenty of room to work.
Their next card, ONE FC 14: War of Nations, takes place on March 14th from the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur. Brock Larsen (37-7) takes on Nobutatsu Suzuki (10-1) in the main event for the welterweight title, a title that will likely be challenged by Ben Askren next. Larsen last defeated Melvin Manhoef at ONE FC 8 what many see as a huge upset.
For Suzuki, his last time out was victorious as he TKO’d UFC veteran Phil Baroni in the first round, a comeback from the previous fight which was his first professional loss.
