As Bellator gears up for Season 10, they have released the flood gates, opening up a torrent of event news to make sure our Fridays are occupied for a long time. The most recent event is Bellator 115. The event is slated for April 4th from the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nevada.
Unlike other recent events that Bellator has announced, this one did not come with news on a tournament’s opening round accompanying the main event. Instead, it was announced with the headline being a heavyweight title fight as Vitaly Minakov (14-0) will look to defend his title for the first time as he faces UFC veteran, Cheick Kongo (19-9-2).
“I am now the Bellator Heavyweight World Champion, and that isn’t going to change,” Minakov said. “It doesn’t matter who is in my way, they are getting finished. Kongo has been around for a long time and is a great challenger, but the belt is staying with me. I’m not giving my belt to anybody. This is my belt.”
Minakov defeated Alexander Volkov at Bellator 108 in November of 2013, winning the belt by TKO in the first round in that event’s co-main event.
Kongo is undefeated in Bellator at 2-0. He debuted against Mark Godbeer who he dispatched in the second round with strikes. His last time in the cage was against Peter Graham who shares a strong kickboxing base with Kongo. Kongo used his strength and size to bully Graham and walk away with a decision win to claim the Bellator Season 9 heavyweight tournament finals.
“Being a Champion is something I’ve wanted for a while,” Kongo said in a press release sent out by Bellator. “It’s not about having it now, or fighting for right now. It’s about when I’m old and retired from the sport, I can always look at that belt on my wall, and know that is why I put in all the hours and made the sacrifices I did. It means a lot to me, and it’s something I want to collect on April 4th.”
