After dropping out several proposed title defenses in early 2014, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (19-1) has his next fight against Glover Teixeira set for Baltimore, Maryland on April 26th at UFC 172. The news was first reported by the Baltimore Sun‘s Childs Walker.
The venue for UFC 172 is the Baltimore Arena which houses 14,000 people. Tickets go on sale for the event on February 7th.
Jones was hesitant to return earlier in the year because he wanted to fully rehab from a brutal five-round fight with Alexander Gustafsson in September. Jones won that bout and became the most dominant champion in the division’s history with six defenses.
His six defenses include Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen and Alexander Gustafsson. His one loss comes at the hands of a disqualification against Matt Hamill after the fight was stopped due to the use of 12-6 elbows by Jones.
The bout with Gustafsson was also the fight of the year for the majority of media outlets while some believe Gustafsson did enough to win.
The number one contender Glover Teixeira (22-2) is unbeaten in the UFC with wins over Kyle Kingsbury, Quinton Jackson, and most recently Ryan Bader who was knocked out by Teixeira just two and a half weeks before Jones’ bout with Gustafsson.
Jones and Teixeira were said to meet on the UFC 169, 170 and 171 cards but the fight was never finalized despite a photo posted of Teixiera signing the contract for UFC 169. UFC 169 is now headlined by a bantamweight title fight between Renan Barao and Urijah Faber. Barao was made the undisputed champion after longtime champion Dominick Cruz suffered another injury and was forced out of the Febraury bout.
This is the only bout made official for UFC 172.
