On the lengthy World Series of Fighting 8 conference call from late Thursday night, the debut’s of two former UFC fighters was confirmed by WSOF Executive Vice President Ali Abdel-Aziz.
Yushin Okami (29-8) and Rousimar Palhares (15-5) are expected to debut against different opponents on a March 29th WSOF event.
Abdel-Aziz and WSOF president Ray Sefo both expressed plans to conduct a large number of fights in 2014 which may mean their debut’s take place at WSOF 10 if the company holds a major event each month.
WSOF has also hinted at plans to air an event on NBC Sports Network parent company NBC whose numbers could be fortified by two names MMA fans are very familiar with.
No opponent has been given for either but seeing as they come in to the promotion as two of the biggest prospects to challenge for a title, their initial competition may be stiff or perhaps title shots.
Palhares was dropped from the UFC after a win against Mike Pierce turned a victory into controversy as Palhares was accused of holding his patented heel-hook in to long which could have cause serious damage to Pierce. This was not Palhares’ first such offense however.
Former middleweight contender Yushin Okami was released after being TKO’d by Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza. Okami had long been at the top of the middleweight division and was released at the end of his contract.
WSOF has already stated that they will not put up with Palhares displaying anything but the utmost professionalism in fights. No word whether Palhares will compete at middleweight as he did for the majority of his UFC career, or welterweight, the division in which he left the promotion in.
