Leg Kicks Almost Forced Hyun Gyu Lim To Quit

Hyun Gyu Lim may have lost at UFC Singapore, but he gained a lot of fans with his impressive, gutsy performance.

Viewers of UFC Singapore  got a glimpse of Lim’s heart, but what they didn’t know what that his corner considered stopping the fight to save to Lim from the vicious barrage of kicks he was receiving from former Strikeforce welterweight Tarec Saffiedine.

At the UFC Singapore press conference, Lim’s corner admitted that it considered throwing in the towel before the fifth round to get away from the repeated leg kicks from Saffiedine. Lim was having trouble standing, but the corner and Lim felt that he couldn’t quit, being in the main event on such a big stage.

Lim actually had a good fifth round, and scored points with a flurry in the final round. He nearly finished Saffiedine before the end of the round.

The last Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Tarec Saffiedine finally made his UFC debut in a fight of the night decision win against South Korean Hyun-Gyu Lim.

Many thought that Saffiedine would be at a disadvantage after a year off from the sport but proved that ring rust was not an issue early in the fight.  After an even first round Saffiedine took over in the second rocking Lim multiple times with tight left and right hooks. The third and fourth rounds were even more dominant for “The Sponge” as he worked the legs of Lim with hard leg kicks rendering the South Korean nearly unable to stand.

Lim began the fifth round barely being able to stand but went for the finish. For the first four minutes and fifty seconds Lim charged forward and peppered Saffiedine with punches and knees but never made true impact. With ten seconds left in the bout Lim crushed Saffiedine with a right hand that left the Strikeforce veteran reeling. Lim followed up the big punch with a flying knee against the cage but was unable to finish Saffiedine before time ran out.

The judges scored the bout 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47 for Tarec Saffiedine

With the win Saffiedine moves to 15-3 while Lim drops to 12-4-1.
