The main card opener was a fight fan’s delight as two hard charging featherweights sought recognition at the top of the ladder as Dustin Poirier (14-3) took on Diego Brandao (18-8). Brandao was over weight by 8 pounds yesterday and lost just 1.5 pounds in the two hours afterwards. He will have 25% of his purse deducted from his purse.
Round 1: The fight started with a fidgety feeling coming from the footwork of both men. Brandao rocked Poirier and glanced with an illegal soccer kick which he immediately apologized for. Poirier was getting caught with big shots as Brandao held nothing back in throwing punches and elbows. His aggressiveness threw the timing of Poirier off, who was dropped again. Poirier showed off an impressive chin and awareness after being hit with big shots. Brandao lunged in with a painfully slow takedown attempt that actually was able to Poirier down. Poirier got back up quite fast and started to land hard on Brandao. He worked body shots in the clinch and a diverse set of punches and elbows when separated all the while trapping Brandao against the cage. Brandao couldn’t throw back and was taken down with ease where Poirier finished the fight with punches in the full guard.
Official Result: Dustin Poirier defeats Diego Brandao via TKO (punches) at 4:54 of Round 1.
