The main event of the night was a heavyweight bout between the legend, Peter Aerts (103-30-1) and Rico Verhoeven (42-9). Verhoeven returns from winning the GLORY 11 heavyweight tournament championship and will battle Aerts, who will retire after their fight.

Round 1: The fight started like what Aerts promised, a fight for his life. He came out strong and staggered Verhoeven. Verhoeven wasn’t hurt badly though and returned fire. A strong inside leg kick tripped Aerts to the mat several times. Aerts came forward with big punches while Verhoeven kept his guard up and waited to counter. Verhoeven landed the cleaner shots but Aerts was surely looking to finish.

Round 2: Aerts again came out trying to destroy Verhoeven. Aerts threw a nice head kick to Verhoeven which landed yet didn’t have the desired effect. Verhoeven stuck to a powerful leg kick on Aerts which were taking their toll at this point. Verhoeven was the more successful fighter this round as he worked a nice cross and his ever worsening low kicks.

Round 3: To the cheering of the fans during Aerts last round of kickboxing, Aerts went to battle with Verhoeven for three more minutes. Aerts was hobbling on one hurt leg yet never slowed while Verhoeven threw with a bit more power behind his punches. Verhoeven stayed aggressive and seemingly landed more. Aerts was never officially knocked down from the hurt leg while Verhoeven worked it throughout the fight.

Official Result: Verhoeven defeats Aerts via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)

On behalf of the SciFighting team we wish the best of luck to Peter Aerts in his retirement and thank him for years of incredible fights from an incredible career.
