Despite not being a top 10 fighter or ever holding a UFC title, Conor McGregor is still immensely popular, especially in his home country of Ireland.
To date, he’s only had two fights in the UFC, and both were this year. In that short span of time though, he’s proven to be a fan favorite.
According to Google, McGregor was Ireland’s most searched athlete in 2013, beating out soccer player Gareth Bale and Olympian Oscar Pistorious. That’s pretty impressive for both the athlete and the sport of MMA, and really shows the growth of the UFC in Europe over this past year.
McGregor is currently out of competition due to a torn ACL, but he hopes to recover in time to appear at the UFC’s return to Dublin. If this recent Google statistic is any indication, he’s going to be a huge draw at that event.
The 25 year old fighter is the former CWFC Featherweight Champion and Lightweight Champion, and the first Irish fighter to hold two world titles in two separate divisions. He currently holds a 14-2 record.
