Following Georges St-Pierre’s controversial split decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167, the promotions president, Dana White, had some harsh words for the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). He scolded the judges and berated the commission publicly by saying that the governor of the state needed to step in, and he was scared to host more fights in Las Vegas.
In stark contrast to what he said about the NSAC, White had nothing but praise for the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) Saturday night after UFC on Fox 9. He also delivered great praise for referees Herb Dean, and John McCarthy.
“I like how they had McCarthy and Dean going back-to-back on some fights,” White said. “You know who the good referees are. You know who they are.”
White was particularly impressed with the way McCarthy handled the headbutting incident in the Joe Lauzon vs. Mac Danzig fight. He publicly acknowledged that that he was very pleased with the way McCarthy handled that situation.
“Lauzon headbutted, and he stopped the fight and said, ‘Watch your head,'” he recalled. “Everybody in the arena knew there was a headbutt, and everybody watching on TV knew it was stopped, and there was a warning for a headbutt. That’s what you do.”
White used that as an example of referees having control over the octagon and doing their jobs correctly. He expounded that very few other referees are able to control fights like Dean and McCarthy are able to.
“John McCarthy has control of that Octagon. Herb Dean has control of that Octagon.”
Kudos to Dean and McCarthy for earning the praise of a man who rarely ever publicly credits anyone. It’s a rare sight to see Dana White telling other people they did a good job at something.
