With recent news of UFC Heavyweight Champ Cain Velasquez’s (13-1) shoulder injury, no. one contender Fabricio Werdum (17-5-1) has been put in rough spot in his career: he can either wait for the champ to recover, or he can fight the winner of Travis Browne (15-1-1) vs. Josh Barnett (33-6). One option he won’t have is to fight for an interim title during the champ’s absence.

“We do [interim titles] when we don’t know when somebody’s going to come back or what’s going on,” White explained during a post-fight media scrum following UFC on FOX 9.

In Velasquez’s case, they know he’s coming back sometime in 2014. With Dominick Cruz (19-1), his knee surgeries were so disastrous that they had no idea when he was going to make a return. That’s why they set up an interim title for his division.

Looks like Werdum will have to wait for Velasquez to heal or fight the winner of Browne vs. Barnett, because he’s definitely not getting an interim title fight.
